(Mushroom Kingdom Press)-The Hammer Brothers of Super Mario fame have plead "not guilty" today to three counts of felonious assault.

The brothers were arraigned early Thursday morning, with the charges stemming from an incident in August of 1989.

"These charges are absolutely ridiculous. My clients would never, under any circumstance, throw hammers at an innocent plumber," said Bowser Greensteinberg, the brothers' lawyer, in a statement released earlier today.

The Hammer Bros. are being detained in prison while awaiting trial. Their bond is set at 350 gold coins.

At a preliminary hearing this morning, the Hammer Brothers and Bowser himself took the stand in defense of the accused hammer-tossing. It should be noted that Bowser's character has been under question since the beginning of the trial, when Mario and his lawyers dug up several kidnapping charges that Bowser plead "no contest" to in a recent hearing. The counts apparently occured on multiple occasions over the course of more than a decade, and involved a young woman simply identified as "The Princess."

Bowser is currently serving a the remainder of a 10 year sentence of house arrest in his castle.

The plaintiff, Mario, described the incident to the jurors this morning. "I was kicking around a turtle shell after a breakfast of yellow mushrooms," Mario stated. "When all of a sudden, i was struck in the head with 2, maybe 3 hammers." Mario went on to describe that the hammers in question "made him shrink," causing him to become very susceptible to future injury.

The Hammer Brothers told a much different story.

"We were building a brick sky-bridge, you know, the ones with Question Mark Blocks. I accidentaly drop a couple of hammers, and here we are, being accused of something terrible. It was a work related injury, I have Blue Cross Insurance, I'm certain this kind of thing is covered," said Brother #1 in a media press conference.

The Hammer Brothers plan on filing a counter suit, accusing Mario of numerous counts of breaking and entering, and an arson charge for what has been described as "Fireball throwing." The suit will implicate Mario and his brother, Luigi, to several race-related mosque burnings in the Israeali district of the Mushroom Kingdom.

Mario has already been convicted and fined 500 gold coins and 50 hours of community service for his involvement in a destruction of personal property last fall. Mario was accused of eating "special mushrooms and flowers" and then sliding down a flag pole, tearing down the flag, and setting off an illegal fireworks display.

Mario could not be reached for comment Thursday.
